A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief
Audu Ogbeh, yesterday apologised to the leaders of the #BringBackOurGirls
(BBOG) group for calling them members of the APC.
Ogbeh had at the formal declaration of former military Head
of State and presidential aspirant, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to announce his bid
to vie for the presidency in 2015 on the platform of the APC, linked the BBOG
group to the party.
In a statement signed by Ogbeh and made available to the
press, the APC chieftain recanted his statement, stressing that his comment was
not intended to paint the group as members of APC.
According to the statement, “I feel obliged to let you know
that my statement at our function last week was not intended to paint your
group as an APC sub-group.
This is because from what we know now, less than two
per cent of the group are our party members, but members we value highly.
The
rest of you are not and may not even belong to any political association
whatsoever. This is not to say that you have no right to be if you choose to.”
Ogbeh therefore apologised and hailed the group’s effort at
bringing the matter to the front burner.
He said, “If my statement caused you discomfort, I do
apologise, but reiterate that I have nothing but respect and admiration for you
for keeping a six-month vigil and telling the world that the Nigerian
conscience is not entirely dead. The world is watching us and making judgments.
I wish you God’s blessing and protection.”
