A group of five fishermen from the Philippines have
discovered a partially-digested human head and leg inside the belly of a huge
tiger shark.
The men landed the beast, which the believe could have
weighed up to 1,300lbs, last week before cutting it open and discovering the
remains inside.
But rather than keep the huge catch, they threw it back into
the ocean along with the body parts, believing it to be bad luck, keeping only
the fins and jaw.
Fisherman Bodoy Gorgod, 48, said: 'It was sodisgusting. We
couldn't bear the awful smell. I began fishing when I was 20 years old and I have
never found human remains inside a shark before.'
The men think that the body parts could have come from
victims of a ferry disaster which happened nearby in September.
There were 84 passengers on board the MV Maharlika when it
sank in stormy waters near Leyte, central Philippines. Two men remain
unaccounted for.
Back on shore experts examined the jaw and fins of the
shark, estimating that the beast could have measured as much as 12 and a half
foot in length.
The men plan to dry out the jaw and fins as a trophy of
their catch but Perly Santillana, the wife of one of the fishermen, told Minda
News that she wants the remains thrown away.
She said: 'I don’t want the sight of that jaw, knowing that
the shark had eaten a human being. Who knows the victim’s spirit might visit
us.'
