Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he will call
early elections and fire his finance and justice ministers for opposing the
administration’s policies.
Benjamin Netanyahu's office said on Tuesday he had ordered
the dismissals of Finance Minister Yair Lapid and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni.
He also said he would dissolve parliament, a move that will
set the stage for snap elections.
“In the past weeks, including the past 24 hours, Finance
Minister Yair Lapid and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni have made harsh attacks
against my government,” Netanyahu said in a text message.
The government has been teetering on the brink of collapse
as Israel grapples with a slowing economy and escalating violence from
Palestinians after the failure of the latest peace talks.
Last month, Fitch Ratings revised Israel’s debt outlook to
stable from positive, citing the fiscal impact of Israel’s war with Gaza Strip
militants in July and August, and political risks stemming from the stagnation
of peace efforts.
