The level of opprobrium directed by Arsenal fans at the
manager, Arsène Wenger, appears to be escalating rapidly. A video has emerged
on YouTube of Wenger being loudly jeered by fans as he boarded a train at
Stoke-on-Trent following his side’s 3-2 defeat by Stoke City on Saturday.
The fans can be heard voicing their growing disenchantment
with the direction in which the 65-year-old is taking the club. “Joely, do the
best thing mate,” one fan called to the striker Joel Campbell. “Get out while
you can, Joel.” Wenger, who criticised his side’s defence in his post-match
comments, then walks past, tight-lipped, to a chorus of boos.
Arsenal had been on a run of three wins in a row before the
defeat at Stoke but the result has reignited calls from some supporters for
Wenger to resign or be sacked. Prior to beating Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the
Champions League on 26 November, they were without a win in three and this had
led many fans to express their frustration with Wenger’s management.
